Should Small Businesses Invest In SEO

When the economy is going through tough times businesses start to look for making cut backs. Normally it’s a catch 22 scenario, as you need more business, which you get through marketing but you also don’t have the money to do it. This question is particularly important with regards SEO, Search Engine Optimization. Should a small business invest in SEO when funds are tight?

Usually small businesses cut their advertising budget first. This is obvious and understandable but how do you expect to get new customers. You can of course focus on existing customers but you’ll always need new ones to progress.

Online marketing is cheaper than traditional methods of advertising. Plus, it is far more targeted and with traffic analysis much easier to see if it works or not. Hence, it owuld make sense for small businesses not to cut their online marketing budget.

But investing in web marketing is money well spent, far better than normal advertising. Because the cutomers you get from online advertsing are far more targeted.

Small businesses may not want to invest in SEO if they already haven’t. But they have no idea that the return on investment from online marketing is far greater than from traditional marketing. Especially in a recession a high ROI is vital and sometimes the difference between survival and failure.

SEO will bring you only customers who are looking for yuor product/service. It makes perfect sense. You get your website ranking high only for the search words/phrases that apply to your business. Hence you get a quality customer, one who is already looking for you.
Newspaper and magazine advertisements cannot compete on this level.

A small business has two choices; do the SEO themselves or hire a professional. If cost is an issue then the first option would seem the way. But how long will it take you to learn SEO? And how well will you be able to do it. You will also be then taking yourself away from the core running of your business, which is a mistake. It’s far better to hire a professional who can do it much quicker than you, which means bringing new customers quicker too.

SEO professional can be expensive, but you don’t have to hire one to do everything. Chances are you have a website already. Unfortunately this is only half the work. You need to do keyword analysis and then optimise your website. This you can feasably do yourself. But hire a professional to do the off page work, link building etc. They’ll get you ranking in no time.
