The 5 Keys For A GREAT Web Host
Through the services I offer at Web Design by Steve, I have had to deal with numerous web hosting companies, and their services. I am hoping that this short article will shed some light on how you should go about choosing a good website hosting company.
1) Bandwidth – I’m sure everybody agrees with me here, and most hosts offer an acceptable level. Those who provide more, this is a great plus, but likely you’ll need to pay for this.
2) Webspace – This is related specifically to what your demands are. How much room do you need? How large will your website be? Will you want to host several domains? And with some hosting providers, you can get started with a minimal amount (bandwidth and webspace), and graduate as your needs increase.
3) Support – For some, especially those who are new to web hosting, this could be key 1. And support types vary for all providers. Some may have 1-800 phone support, while others supply only email ticket service. In my experience with web design, I’ve used all of these, but prefer the ticket system, provided that replies aren’t longer than 2 hours. Why would I prefer email over phone? When you use phone support, you have a lot of wasted time going from:
__ • You will usually be speaking with 2-3 operators, transferred through, as they understand your need.
__ • You need to supply every operator with your identification.
__ • If you need to return to phone support, it’s likely that you won’t be speaking to the same person.
__ • Many of these techs either cannot understand your problem, or don’t have enough experience.
__ • There’s always the possibility of getting a foreign tech who is difficult to converse with.
When using the email ticket system, you can specify what type of problem you’re having, so that the tech experienced with this will be servicing you. And as you go into explaining your problem, the ticket reciprocant can get advice from other techs, so when they reply, you can more likely get the answer you are looking for.
Best of all, is the chat systems, especially if they offer 24-7-365 immediate online service. But if they don’t have it available when you’re seeking assistance, this will revert to an email reply, my second best choice.
4) Control Panel – some of these can be a real time consumer to go from one part of the system to another. And some of them can require on-hands training or several support requests to understand.
5) Security – most web hosts don’t offer anything extraordinary here, but having a secure password check is always nice. And some hosts will inform you, should there be dangerous scripting running on your webspace (likely placed there by a hacker). Going beyond that, is a web host that offers IP security, so that only designated users can access your files through your online host.
You may notice that I didn’t place uptime here. That’s because I’ve never experienced an unacceptable amount of downtime with any hosts that I’ve worked with. Most offer 99.9% uptime (even if it’s not so). But I do believe that it’s possible to hook up with an inexperienced host who doesn’t have this monitored. You should always go with a reputable company.
