Google Pagerank Update – First In 2006

With much enthusiasm and equally much concern, there are clear signs that a new Google PageRank update is happening right now as we speak.

Most of you, web site owners, publishers and SEO consultants, are probably dreading these updates just as much as I do: after a period of working hard into acquiring new valuable links, the inevitable question is “Will I be rewarded? And if so, just how much?”

Let’s take a glimpse into what the new PageRank update is bringing:

First, let’s see what will your page’s new PageRank be?

If you haven’t done this yet, check the page(s) that interest you using a Future PageRank tool.

This simple tool sends queries to known Google data centers in order to retrieve the PageRank of the given URL. It should normally show the same PageRank for all centers, however, if you run the tool during an actual PageRank update, you can see variations from one data center to another thus previewing what your page’s future PageRank will be.

Caught any changes?

Whatever the answer, there are some logical explanations for it.

After studying the performance of several web sites, these are the conclusions I have come upon:

1. The trend to reward links from content-related web sites continues.

Web sites that have focused on gathering quality links, both reciprocal and non-reciprocal, from web sites with related content, shall expect to see their efforts to be successful: a relatively small amount of related links, even if reciprocal, proves to be much more beneficial than thousands of totally unrelated links.

However, one must not forget that climbing on the PageRank ladder becomes increasingly difficult as you ascend. If your web site already had a good PageRank before this update (i.e. 4 and above) it is possible not to see an improvement on the 0 to 10 scale. The true PageRank scale is exponential: the distance from 3 to 4 is much smaller than the distance from 4 to 5, and the distance from 4 to 5 is tiny compared to the distance from 5 to 6!

If you know you have planned and executed your SEO plan correctly in terms of building link popularity (and that means focusing on gathering links from related sites, work towards getting non-reciprocal links, and paid attention to various way PageRank can leak out of your pages), keep on the good works and if possible intensify them: you’ll be rewarded by the next update, depending on how high is your current PageRank.

2. Newly created web sites are able to achieve a nice PageRank from their first PageRank update, providing they played fair in the link building game: little but quality links, and care for not leaking PageRank when not necessary can easily get a PR of 3 to a new site!

The issue of PageRank leaking has been probably overly-discussed within the SEO media, yet it might still be useful to mention that there is “good” leaking and “bad” leaking and it’s only up to the site’s publisher to make a choice:

- “good leaking” is when a site links to external resources that are of benefit for its readers, thus giving a vote of trust and approval to the linked site;

- similarly, “bad leaking” is when a site associates itself with a resource search engines (Google, in this case) dislike, such as link farms, sites employing gray or black SEO techniques, or sites with totally unrelated content (this usually happens when, in an attempt to monetize a site, ads and links to unrelated resources are published).

3. Sites that acquired no new linkbacks since the previous update seem not to be penalized (unlike a while ago!), and stay constant with their older PageRank.

The current PageRank scale seems to be stabile and it might take a while until it is brought down a level, in order to keep some proportions to it.

If this is the case for your sites, it might be a good idea that you start a link building campaign in order to make sure your site is not in danger of being brought down at a further update. Depending on the intensity and quality of your campaign, you can even go up the ladder – with all the benefits this can bring.

To sum up, Google’s new PageRank update shows clear signs of continuing the existing trend of rewarding those who employ clean, honest techniques against the less innocent ones. This is nothing but good news for the SEO community and serious publishers, however, there’s no guarantee we will live to see the end of the war between the “good” guys and the “bad” guys of the SEO world.

Google Page Rank Update

Many people are suggesting that google is currently updating the page rank of each site, this is what can be seen on the google toolbar and is basically a rating out of ten for each website. From reading some of the messages on the search engine forums, different people are reporting changes where as other people as of yet have seen no changes. It is reported that by the middle of July in 2006 this update should be visible on all data-centers, however with google you never can tell as they seem to like to keep people guessing.

In reality many people think that this will have little effect on the over all search engine ranking position of each site as they believe that google has already factored these changes on a daily or weekly basis in its search results, but that it only shows the new page rank of each site on its toolbar around every three months.

So what is all of the fuss about you may be thinking. Why are so many people always so eager for the next google page rank update to take place? In my opinion it could be for two reasons:

Fear of seeing a lower overall page rank

Not all webmasters are able to spend as much time as they would like to, in promoting their own website. Having a good page rank is like having their site recognised as a good and worthy site and they fear that if they were to be lowered that this could have a negative affect on their sales etc. They may think that people may be tempted to buy their products if their site is classed as a page rank six, however that they may think twice if it was only a page rank four.

Expectation of a higher page rank

Other webmasters who put in a lot of work promoting their site are hoping and even expecting to see an increase in page rank for their site. If they achieve this, all of their hard work will have been worthwhile and it will act as an inspiration for them to continue promoting their sites in the same way. If they see no changes or even worse a lowering of page rank, it will show them that they may need to change the way that they are promoting their site.

Is page rank important?

I have read many articles and read many messages on different search engine forums which suggest that their is too much emphasis placed on the importance of page rank. In a way I agree but I do however think that having a high page rank is of benefit. Page rank is not the be all and end all, and people should not become too angry if they are not able to for example obtain a page rank five straight away. I believe hard work pays off and that a website should be seen as a long term project. If you stick by the rules, there is no reason why within a few years your site should not be rewarded with a respectable page rank value. I think that too many people who bring out new sites are trying to get rich quick, obtain far too many backward links too quickly and see the whole thing as a sprint rather than a marathon.

Like most people, I am hoping to see some positive results from this page rank update, however I aim to stick around to see another one hundred updates, therefore I will not be shedding any tears if a couple of my sites go down a grade or two.

Top 10 SEO Tips And Tricks That Will Get Your Site Ranked Higher In Google

There are literally hundreds of SEO Tips and Tricks from various sources all across the internet. Many internet marketers will claim that their internet tips will guarantee you the “holy grail” of internet marketing which is the top spot on Google. Realistically, no one knows Google’s secret algorithm and the people who “guarantee” a top spot on Google are selling you a scam. The secret to SEO is simply beating the other guys. Like the old saying goes… “You don’t have to run faster than the bear, you just have to run faster than the guy next to you”. This is the secret to that top spot ranking. You must simply have a better SEO optimized site than your competitors.

With that in mind, we have put together a “Top 10″ list of SEO tips that we KNOW work. We know they work because we have tried them our self, and we have seen them work for our customers who have tried them. Do these, and we guarantee your site will move up the rankings.

1. Content is King. Or in the words of John Reese, “Content is better than King, Content is Kong!” Think of your website like internet real estate. The more internet real estate you own, the more important you are to the search engines. If you notice how many pages, and how much content “The Biggies” (i.e. Amazon, eBay, Microsoft, Wikipedia, etc.) have it’s incredible. They have hundreds of thousands (and possibly even millions) of pages on their sites. So you need to generate fresh new content regularly. This is the MOST IMPORTANT factor of SEO.

2. Bold Your Keywords. Make a few of your keywords Bold on your pages. You can do this by using the


tags around your keywords. Now this can be easily over done, but pick a couple keywords that you are trying to optimize and make them Bold. This will notify the search engines that these words are important on your page and give you a couple extra points for those keywords. Just be careful not to overdo it.

3. Articles. Articles are an excellent way to build content on your site. What makes articles even more valuable is the fact that you can not only publish them on your site, you can submit them to article directories who will publish them on their sites with a link back to your site. 4. Deep Links. Google is getting much smarter about links. Sheer quantity will not help you any longer. Even link exchanges are starting to get discounted. However, quality links are still counted heavily. You need to have links coming into as many pages within your site as possible. This tells the search engines that you have relevant content all over your site, and that you are not using an automated link exchange. If all of your inbound links are to the same page, the search engines think you have a shallow site that has only one page relevant to the topic or keyword.

5. Image Links are a Problem. If you feel you must use image links, make sure you have text links that appear first in your coding. The search spiders will follow the first link they come across, and all signs show they will not follow an image link. Now, we must inform you that no one knows the behaviors of search spiders exactly, and the behaviors of search spiders are always changing. But, our research has proved that search spiders will not follow additional links to the same page.

6. Have Multiple Domains. If you can, have a separate domain name for each topic/keyword. Search engines take into consideration the URL of a website when they are ranking for keywords. For example, if you create two identical sites about golf equipment, and you are trying to optimize for the keyword phrase: Nike Golf Balls. Which URL do you think Google will rank higher: GolfStuff.com/products/nikegolfballs.html, or NikeGolfBalls.com? In this case NikeGolfBalls.com would get priority.

7. Participate in Article Exchanges. Article exchanges are like link exchanges on steroids! Article exchanges are a great way to build quality content on your site as well as get your content out on other sites. An example of an article exchange would be if you published someone else’s article on your site with a link back to their site; in turn, they will publish one of your articles with a link back to your site. This is especially effective if you have a specialized product. Let’s use our Nike golf ball example. You publish an article from a site that gives tips and tricks on improving your golf game and provide a link to their site. In turn, they publish your article on Nike golf balls with a link back to your site. If done right, this is a win win situation. The other site gets some of your traffic from people who are interested in tips and tricks, and you get some of their traffic from people who are interested in Nike golf balls.

8. Mix Up Your Inbound Links. You do not want all of your inbound links looking exactly the same. If all your links look the same they will be discounted by the search engines because it looks like automation. It is best to mix it up, especially utilizing keywords. Typically webmasters will use their page’s title as the link text, and this is OK, but not all the time. Use the name of the company or keywords. If you use the keywords this will give you extra points with the search engines when it comes to your page’s relevancy for that keyword.

9. Linkbait. By far the best way to get incoming links is through Linkbait. Linkbait is having content that others find valuable and link to it. This relates back to content and is by far the best way to get quality natural links. If you write a killer article or blog post, people will link to it without any additional effort from you, and the search engines will pick up on this.

10. Include a Sitemap. This is one of the simplest tips that many webmasters ignore. Keeping an up-to-date sitemap makes your site much easier for the search engines to index. Many SEO experts claim that simply having a sitemap yields a few extra points from the search engines. Whether that is true or not, making your site more pleasing to the search robots and spiders is always a good thing. If you do not know how to make a sitemap, you can perform a Google search for XML-Sitemaps and find one that will generate one for you for free!

The Duplicated Content Debate – Will Google Cripple Your Website Ranking?

How do you create a website that the search engines love? It’s simple really – have lots of targeted content that closely relates to your site theme.

Recently though, we have heard a lot about “duplicated content” and how that can damage your site rankings in Google. You’ll see a frenzy of people saying things such as:

“Oh I mustn’t publish this article, I’ll get done for duped content”.

“I shouldn’t use private label rights content because others will be using the same content and that will hurt my chances of getting free search engine traffic.”

But do you know what? Before jumping on the “duped content is evil” bandwagon, consider these facts:

(a) There are a LOT of high ranking websites that are just plastered with nothing BUT duplicate content. If duplicated content really does matter, why aren’t these sites being banned from the engines?

(b) Google itself has not said that duplicated content is a no-no. Sure, it doesn’t exactly wear its heart on its sleeve when it comes to disclosing the factors it uses to rank sites but even so there has been little indication from Google that duplicated content will hurt your website.

(c) There are those to whom this “duplicated content” hysteria is very convenient and profitable. For example it gives people the opportunity to create products, books and software that deals with the dreadful issue of duplicated content. Article content changer software is a prime example of this – this niche market is worth a small fortune as content publishers who buy private label rights are forced to fork out a hundred or so bucks to allow them to make their purchased content unique in the eyes of search engines. It’s in the software developers interests to cause a stir about duped content because the moment it’s revealed that duplicate content isn’t really an issue they’ll lose a lot of sales overnight.

So how do you move forward with any level of certainty? You know search engines do like fresh content but what if you just don’t have the time to plug in content that’s 100% unique? The best way is to use a model that adds both unique content as well as purchased content (or free content from article directories) and optimise the page accordingly (remember – your page titles should all be individually optimised to the content).

Ultimately, unless you are employing blatantly unethical tactics to trick the search engines, the issue of duplicated content will not be a particularly tricky one for your websites. What does matter is that your site is well optimised and has plenty of back links from high ranking sites coming in. That’s the sort of thing that gets you rated high – even if your site has some content that’s commonly plastered over the internet.

Using Nofollow Correctly

As I browse through the webmaster forums I notice a common confusion among the webmasters and bloggers and that is the use of the no follow tag. Several questions arise surrounding the myths of this tag and the misconceptions that many have. I have read that people absolutely refuse to place a link on a no follow website or blog and I have heard that others think that it helps their search engine results. First let’s discuss what the no follow actually does and where it derives from. The alt=”nofollow” tag is a way which a website can link to another website without actually helping that website increase in page rank or search engine position. That is what people mean when they say a no follow blog (default) or when the no follow is removed that is what people call a do follow website or blog. Why would the major search engines use such a tag? I mean if a website does not want to give a vote then they would just not link to the website. Well a few years back blogging really took off and led to some serious spam. Since a blogger really doesn’t have the same control as a webmaster or perhaps not the same understanding of linking structure Google (the creator of blogger.com) and wordpress decided to combat this spam by making all comments on blogs no follow meaning when someone commented on a blog and left their link it would not count.

The main reason Google and other search engines use the no follow is your in links are NOT the only thing that matter. You can build or receive hundreds of thousands of in links which are high quality, but you can still not see first page results. The reason for this is Google will look at your outgoing links and judge the quality of your website on that rather than the link coming in. The reason they stopped placing the majority of importance of where links are coming from is webmasters who reached the top by placing their competitor’s websites on crappy areas of the web. So Google and other major search engines decided to start placing more and more importance on where outgoing links were pointed. Now if you are sending links/votes towards crappy spammy places on the web then you should expect to see a severe drop within the SERPs. If you for some reason would like to talk about or link to without giving a vote then placing the alt=”nofollow” would be the way to go. If you want to show your traffic who your competitors are without giving them a boost in the SERPs then placing the nofollow in the hyper link would be a good way to go. Remember that if you have a ton of outgoing links you should expect to do poorly if they are not no follow. Also it is good to send out good links to authoritative places on the web give your votes to the websites which deserve them and you would like Google to associate you with.
