The Meta Tags, specifically the ones for keywords and the site or page description, have a similar function to the title tag. They help a search engine robot to properly classify the content of a web page. The meta keyword tag is simply a list of the keywords that relate to the content of a page, separated by commas. It pays to do some research and discover the keywords and keyword phrases that surfers use when searching for information on the topic of your site.

The meta description tag is used to provide a short precis of the content of a page. It only needs to be three or four sentences long but it should be written in a way that will encourage people to visit your site. Is that a coincidence? It is difficult to argue with the facts here that seemingly Google upgraded a sub-domain due to the work being done on it, and as an extra reward it also upgraded the main domain. There has been no backlink work done with the main domain and no articles published since the middle of December, and that was the only one for several weeks.

The problem with this surmise though is that the web design for holiday homes sub-domain on the same site has acquired no PR.
There has been a fair amount of backlink work done on this sub-domain but the critical factor is possibly that this particular sub-domain is only a coule of months old, if that.

So what is going on here? Is the work on the PR2 sub-domain being mirrored by Google in the main domain and the other sub-domain being ignored for being to young? Or is it all just a coincidence? Does anybody actually know how Google accounts for things like this?
Another part of the equation is simply that perhaps the successful sub-domain has more and better quality backlinks at the moment than the other one.

It would be terrific to have the belief, that Google is rewarding the efforts to market the sub-domain, but the question of how long it should take to get ranking on the other sub-domain will hold another part of the answer.

Analysing Google PageRank: The Fall Of A Myth

The Google PageRank is the subject of wide discussion and speculation in the search engine marketing industry. Many think that it has no impact on the ranking of a page in Google, while others believe it is important. What is PageRank?

In order to view the PageRank a user should go into the options setting on the Google Toolbar and enable the service under the “More” tab. The lack of a green bar for a page means the PageRank is 0. A greyed-out PageRank indicates that the page has either not yet been indexed, assigned a PageRank or has been banned / delisted by Google.

Although the PageRank algorithm is very complex, for the purpose of this article it is enough to understand that the PR is no more than a direct indication of the number and quality of links

How can we spot a good quality backlink?

In general a link pointing to a page, which can be spidered by Google and will contribute towards an increase in the PageRank would be considered to be a good backlink for that page.
Plain text links, made of plain text (knows as the anchor text) surrounded by simple HTML link code are usually ideal. The URL referenced in the link HTML should point directly to the page e.g. http://www.example.com/ and should not be redirected to the destination page via a script, e.g. /redir.php?linkdestination=123456. The Google algorithm cannot decipher script code and so it will not consider a redirected link to be a vote for the page in question.

Other characteristics of good backlinks include:
• The page where the link comes from must not have a nofollow attribute (rel=”nofollow”) in the anchor tag HTML
• Both link source and destination pages should be relevant to each other
• Anchor text should also be relevant to the subject of both the source and destination pages
• The backlink should be located in the main body of the source page rather than being placed in the footer or some obscure position
• The source page should ideally have a higher PageRank than the one the link points to
• The number of outgoing links from the source page should be few and should not exceed 100 links.

Google’s ongoing efforts to eliminate spam from the search results has led to a devaluation of paid links and reduction in the PageRank of websites that have a high percentage of poor quality backlinks. The former was a result of recent changes in the PageRank algorithm that led to a reduction in PR of a number of popular websites that used to sell. The second one was a result of changes made in the Google algorithm that incorporated a new measure called Spam Mass. As a result, buying and selling links can negatively affect PageRank, as can having too many low quality links pointing to a page.

Influence of PageRank on SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages:

It is widely believed that PageRank has a direct influence on the web page’s ranking in the search engine results, and therefore a page with a PR6 will automatically have a better rank than a page with a PR4. This is note true. PageRank does not directly influence a page’s ranking on Google.
Google never takes into account the PageRank score itself to determine rank. Nevertheless it does use (among other things) the number, quality and relevance of backlinks to determine the page’s rank, factors which also influence the PageRank itself.

Does Google PageRank Matter?

We’ve all seen that small green bar that fills up when you visit different web pages. Ever asked yourself ‘what does it really mean’? Does PageRank really matter? Surely the only people that value it are the scammers selling links? In this article I will try and give my view on Google PageRank and the potential questions it raises. I’ll refer to PageRank from now on as ‘PR’.

Around two years ago, I created a typical software retail webstie, free trial download and purchase etc. As a sort of ‘test’ I did not intentionally start link building straight away, all I did was optimise my site SEO-wise for the search engines and maybe submit to a website directory or two for traffic. Where am I going with this, you ask? Well, I wanted to see what sort of PR this site would get, with (Alexa quote) – 4 links back to it. Yes, just 4, from very unnoticeable websites.

Before I proceed I wish to clarify that there are two types of PageRank. The first type is not visible and is calculated all the time. I’ll call it ‘real PR’. Real PR determines your actual ranking on the google SERPs. The second type is called Toolbar PageRank, which is basically the little green bar on the Google Toolbar that fills up to different levels depending on the site you are viewing. This can often be months out of date because Toolbar PageRank is updated globally by Google every 3-4 months or so.

Pretty quickly, the site in question achieved a Toolbar PR of 3. This got me thinking. I was expecting to get a PR of maybe 1, after all, I’ve seen websites with many more links than I had get less PR. Now, any of you with experience in link building or SEO will probably be saying ‘your site had a good navigation structure so the PR collected on the homepage’ and anyone with no experience in link building or SEO will probably be saying ‘only a PR of 3?…’. Well, I gave this example to show that maybe backlinks are not the only contributor to Toolbar PR. Sound radical? Well, maybe.

Google was founded on the premise that the amount and more importantly the quality of links a site has, the better that site and so the higher the PR. Now, PR, as you may or may not know, flows like a liquid, so that if I link to someone’s website from mine, it is as if I’m pouring my liquid into another person’s beaker. I lose a bit of my PR and the other website gains a bit. What does this ultimately mean then? Well basically, it is better to get a link from a website with relatively low PR and few outbound links than a site with relatively high PR and a lot of outbound links. This is because in the latter case the PR will be distributed among a lot of sites so your site will actually not get a lot of that site’s PR.

Earlier, I mentioned something rather odd. I said that there could be ‘other factors’ apart from links that affected PR, specifically Toolbar PR. I invite you to do a little test. Try to build a website that has a good rank in the search engines (within the first two pages) for a relatively manageable keyword. Only try to get a few links though. Well now you probably think I’m totally crazy, but try it. Given the example of my website earlier, it was ranked about #6 in Google for the keyword ‘Universal Converter’, but had only 4 links. My point is that there is some evidence to show that you cannot help but get Toolbar PR if you have a good natural search engine result position. Maybe the ‘other factors’ that affect Toolbar PR are the same ones that affect your natural search position?

Too many people now just focus on increasing their Toolbar PR. And who can blame them? It is the only real visual indicator you have of how well your website is ranking. However, our real focus should be on getting true ranking in the search engines. Scammers and people selling links often quote their PR to get people to hand over their cash. Beware, they sometimes manipulate their PR. Other times, their websites are ones that have been recently dropped by previous owners and re-registered, while regaining the PR of before.

So, does Google PageRank matter? Well, the truth is, Toolbar PR does not matter, but real PR does. If you want my advice, ignore those green pixels on the toolbar. Concentrate on getting real PageRank by optimising your site for the search engines and promoting your site correctly. For example, submit it to reputable web directories such as Best Website Directory. Believe me, it’s the best way to go.

Can PageRank Remain With Us Evermore, Or Is It Probably To Be Removed Shortly?

I could see the point of Google giving us access to the PageRank information way back when it first became public. But following the April 3rd update, Google has gone longer than ever before without a major update. Yes, little ‘tweaks’ have been revealed as several websites get ‘corrected’, but no major world wide update.

And that update is perhaps a task that is very resource intensive. If Google are no longer using the information, then there really is no need for a complete refresh. In the past even if, perhaps there was.

What was the reason previously for sharing this data? After all, Google is dead against people selling links based on PageRank, so why reveal the core of the algorithm?

Is Google data gathering?
Well data gathering was possibly the key. The toolbar tells Google what page you are looking at and they send back the PR. Google therefore knows what pages you are viewing, how a lot of pages of a web site you view and if you bounced etc.

Look at how often PageRank updates came round up to November 2005. 2, 3 or even 4 updates per month. Then suddenly monthly. What happened in November 2005?

Well Google purchased Urchin on Demand earlier in the year and released it’s own version in November – Google Analytics. Demand was huge and they had to limit new signups, until August 2006 when it was again opened to everyone (and around the time that PR updates became quarterly).

Analytics is without doubt very popular
With virtually half the 1,000,000 top ranked Alexa websites using Google Analytics, it has got a huge amount of coverage. In fact of the 10,000 highest ranking websites it is thought that 57% use Analytics.

So now Google has another way into our website’s traffic data. One that gives it complete coverage of everything that users are doing. It knows what websites visitors actually browse through fully and which they leave straight away and this is highly valuable information. Rather than looking at how loads of web sites link to your website, it might judge you by how visitors behave on your website.

Does PageRank have a future?
I think that PageRank is just there for as long as Google needs a backup plan in place. But probably they are around to finally ditch the backup and that is why we have not seen an update in a while.

So don’t be too amazed, or worried, when all of your sites suddenly lose all of their PageRank. At least then we can have people worrying round visitors, and not some little green bar.
