Ebook Royalties For Authors: How Much Money Can I Possibly Receive?

Writing a truly unique and useful ebook is not a simple task: it takes considerable time and energy to write a piece of work that is truly correct, to-the-point, as well as enjoyable to read. So unless you are just writing for the joy of it, you have got to prudently weigh in what your options are in terms of your future royalty payments, in order for you to really make money with an ebook. How much royalty you will obtain depends on a variety of factors.

As you would expect, “payment” or “royalty” is not an entirely uncomplicated matter to talk about. Surely, the concept of royalties is in essence about the actual quantity of dollars or pounds sterling that you would get with a particular publishing arrangement. But there are also alternative aspects of an arrangement or contract that may be just as important, and conceivably even more so. Such aspects can be, for instance, the duration of the deal, the question about the precise time for payments, and so on.

However, in this current article I shall mostly talk about the total sum of money that you might anticipate from different kinds of royalties arrangements. Even if there are many different types of deals in the publishing world for writers and authors, I shall in this short article sketch out only four types of royalties: “list price percentage|, “net receipts percentage”, “net receipts percentage”, and “full list price”.

1. Publisher’s “List Price Percentage” Royalties

The “List Price Percentage” model is perhaps the most “intuitive” of them all. This royalty model is relevant when writers or authors approach major publishing houses to market their ebooks (or even ordinary books). This model practically boils down to that the writer will receive a certain percentage of the ebook’s (retail) list price. The precise percentage typically varies between 10 and 20 %.

For instance, if the royalty deal is such that the writer gets 20 percent of the $15 the ebook is sold for, the author should get a royalty of $3 per book (0.20 x 15).

This sort of royalties arrangement has formerly been “standard procedure at leading publishers such as Random House and Simon & Schuster. But these publishers have now transferred to the second royalties model, the “Net Receipts Percentage”.

2. Publisher’s “Net Receipts Percentage” Royalties

Another royalty model is the “Net Receipts Percentage”, or the “Net Proceeds Percentage” model, which is applicable when authors approach major publishing houses to publish and market their e books. At present, a number of publishers use this royalties model, including Macmillan, Random House, and Simon & Schuster.

In this case the author will obtain a given percentage of the net sales of the ebook. This percentage normally amounts to between 10 percent and 25 percent of the net proceeds.

For instance, if the royalty arrangement is such that the author gets 20 per cent of the net sales, then the computation can look something like the following. Assuming a list price of $25, and also assuming that the net sales for the publisher is, say, 60 percent of the list price (i.e., the retailer gets 40 percent), the writer should get a royalty of $3 per e book (0.20 x 0.60 x 25).

3. Self-Publisher’s “Flex-Price Net Receipts Percentage” Royalties

A third option could be to publish your ebook all by yourself, but nevertheless use one or several retailers and distributors to advertise and sell it. For instance, you can use sales channels such as Lulu.com.

In this set-up the author will get a certain percentage of the net sales of the e book, and in this sense it is very similar to the second model above, the one named “Net Receipts Percentage”. However, although the models are similar, the “Flex-Price Net Receipts Percentage” has the main advantage that your cut per book will be radically higher, assuming that you will sell your e-book for more than simply a dollar or two.

Another big dissimilarity is this. Because you are self-publishing your e-book, you could actually determine yourself what the list price should be. That way you will have more flexibility in terms of setting a product price that might yield maximum royalties for you.

4. Self-Publisher’s “Full List Price” Royalties

The fourth alternative is to do everything yourself. In that case you will be responsible for not only the publishing of your e-book but also the advertising, as well as the sales. This means that you almost surely must have your very own website or blog where you promote your product or products.

Note, though, that you do not unavoidably have to have a very complicated and expensive e-business solution integrated with your website. You might instead utilize a simple solution such as the payment processing used by paypal.com, or other comparable systems.

In any event, the sum of royalty earnings to be expected from this fourth arrangement is fairly easy to compute, as you will keep all the earnings for yourself. Naturally, however, depending on the exact solution you are using, you may wish to adjust the figures, in order to properly account for costs related to services such as your site or blog hosting or your payment processing, etc.

Final remarks

It might not be very easy to decide which royalties model suits you the best. One factor might be, for instance, how involved you are in marketing. If you are very interested in marketing your own ebook or ebooks online, then royalties models 3 and 4 may very well be good for you.

However, if you are for the most part an author, and not so attracted to online marketing, it might not be a bad idea to try out the first and second royalty models. The downside with these two royalty scenarios is, unfortunately, that it is not so unproblematic to get published; but if you don’t get lucky, you may always try models three and four as your plan B.

If you have never used PLR content to create new content, you should give it a try. Once you do, you will understand why so many writers love to use it for their online businesses. Many writers not only produce their ebooks this way, but also use PLR materials to create fantastic websites with many well-written articles. Using high-quality PLR material is an excellent way to establish you as an expert in your niche market.

So then, how can you make money with PLR ebooks? Well, there are, naturally, many ways. But here are three methods that may be interesting if you are planning on starting up your own home-based online business with e books: (1) Sell the ebook on your website; (2) Give the ebook away for free; (3) Give the ebook away as a bonus.

1. Sell the Ebook and Make Money

The most natural idea is, perhaps, to just put your PLR ebook up for sale at your website. Depending on the size of it (is it 20 pages or 200?) and quality/uniqueness (how good is it in relation to your competitors’ products?), you may decide to give it a price of anything from $7 and upwards. But don’t sell it too cheap (unless it is part of a multi-campaign, in which you are aiming to promote a much more expensive ebook or ecourse, etc.); customers do relate price to product quality and overall product image.

2. Give Your Ebook Away for Free

Giving away a PLR ebook for free may be an excellent way to get visitors to sign up on your autoresponder newsletter list. That, in itself, is worth a lot of money, assuming that you have other products (e.g. ebooks) or services (e.g. education) that you are planning to sell to them.

After having read your free ebook, and after having read your free information that you are sending them regularly as being members of the newsletter list, they will gradually acquire respect for you as an expert. You can then start marketing your other (more comprehensive, more expensive) ebooks and ecourses that are in the same niche.

3. Give Your Ebook Away As a Bonus

Some Private Label Rights material include the right to give the material away as a bonus when you are selling some other product. If that is the type of PLR text you have used to produce your ebook, then you can give it away as a bonus when you sell some other product.

The other product that you are promoting might be, for example, another ebook, yours or someone else’s. Or it could be an ecourse, or some software program. Whatever the product may be, bonuses are a very important incentive to your prospective customers; so your bonus ebook may be the difference between them buying or not buying your product.

Final Remarks

It is safe to say that even if you buy a Private Label Rights product, you still have to put in a considerable amount of work to make it unique. Your aim should be to make it suit your customers’ needs as well as possible, while still making it fit in with your own set of products.

So when you rewrite the plr ebooks, you may try to improve it not only in a stylistic sense to make its voice more personal, but also to adjust and expand on facts, data, illustrations, and links. This will ensure that your e book will be more unique and of better quality, and that it may also be better positioned in relation to all of your other ebooks and products that you are offering on your website.
